The first part of the problem lies in the damage caused by fossil fuel emission. Fossil fuels are the primary cause of the phenomenon known as global warming, the gradual increase of ocean, atmosphere, and surface temperatures. If this temperature trend continues, life on earth will become much more difficult to maintain. The second part of the energy problem is the decline of fossil fuels. When the fossil fuel deposits are depleted or become obsolete, what will fill the energy void? Although many alternative energy sources have been presented, nuclear fusion energy, the same energy that powers the stars, is the only power source that can solve the energy problem. Global warming is a serious issue affecting the modern world. This phenomenon is caused by increased amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (Bradford). In fact, the atmosphere now contains 40% more carbon dioxide than in the mid-1700’s (â€Å"Causes of Climate Change†). The Greenhouse Effect, caused by gasses such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane, traps heat within the atmosphere that would normally be reflected into space. The retention of heat is natural and has occurred since the earth’s formation; however, the retention rate has never increased so rapidly.
